What your natal chart actually means
A natal chart is a snapshot of exactly where the sun, moon, and planets were the moment you were born, mapped onto the zodiac and stretched around a wheel of twelve houses. Your sun sign is just one point on that wheel — here's what the rest of it is actually telling you.
Sun, Moon & Rising — the big three
These three carry the most weight in how a chart reads, because they cover the three things people notice about you first: who you are, how you feel, and how you come across.
- Sun
- Your core identity — who you're fundamentally trying to be, underneath everything else.
- Moon
- Your emotional world — how you process feelings, whether or not anyone else can see it.
- Rising
- Your first impression — the version of you that shows up before anyone gets to know the rest.
The other eight placements
Mercury, Venus, and Mars move fast enough to be personal to you specifically. Jupiter through Pluto move slowly enough that they mark your whole generation more than they mark you as an individual.
- Mercury
- How you think and communicate — the shape your words and ideas take.
- Venus
- How you love and what you're drawn to — your taste, your affection, what feels good.
- Mars
- How you take action — how you assert yourself and go after what you want.
- Jupiter
- How you grow — where you expand, take risks, and look for more.
- Saturn
- Your discipline — the boundaries and responsibilities you build your life around.
- Uranus
- How your generation tends to break from convention.
- Neptune
- The dreams and ideals your whole generation shares.
- Pluto
- How your generation experiences power and transformation.
What are houses?
Houses divide the wheel into twelve life areas — home, work, relationships, and so on — and where each planet falls tells you which area it's actively shaping. We calculate houses using the whole-sign system: whatever sign your rising falls in becomes your entire 1st house, and the rest follow in order around the wheel. It's simpler than degree-by-degree cusps, and it's exactly what your chart above is already using.
